Five years ago we founded Improve International with the goal of strengthening the way water and sanitation programming is done so that people can count on these investments every day.  While there is still a lot of work to be done, we are happy to report that our efforts to influence and improve these global efforts are gaining traction (see the image above for some examples).

While we are marking our fifth anniversary this year, we aren’t celebrating it per se.  We exist because people aren’t getting the safe water and sanitation services they have a right to.  Ultimately, we want to go out of business because everybody has safe, reliable, convenient water service, and safe, hygienic and convenient toilets that meet their needs and desires.  So we don’t see our anniversary as cause for celebration, but rather an ongoing call to action.

The cumulative cost of failed water systems in sub-Saharan Africa alone is estimated to be more than $1.5 billion. This doesn’t count the unused or collapsed toilets.  This doesn’t include the money and time invested by the beneficiaries themselves. It is a colossal waste of resources and a devastating blow to poor communities when water and sanitation investments fail.

We are determined to fight these failures and find ways forward. But we need your support to grow our influence.  We must convince donors and development organizations to embed sustainability and accountability into their everyday practices through impactful research and compelling data.  You can give us a High 5 to help us deepen and broaden our impact!
